Israel-Gaza conflict: Dozens killed in Israeli airstrike on Rafah camp
At least 45 people were killed when Israeli missiles hit a camp for displaced people in the southern Gaza town of Rafah on Sunday, according to the Gaza health ministry.
The Israeli military said it was reviewing the strike after reports said it had killed two Hamas officials.
The missiles struck tents in an area to the west of Rafah, which has been heavily bombarded by Israeli forces in recent days.
The strike is the deadliest single incident in the current round of fighting between Israel and Hamas, which began on July 8.
The Israeli military said it was targeting Hamas militants who were using the camp to launch rockets into Israel.
However, witnesses said that the vast majority of those killed were civilians, including women and children.
The strike has been widely condemned by the international community.
The United Nations called it a "heinous crime" and demanded an independent investigation.
The European Union said it was "deeply concerned" by the strike and called on Israel to "exercise maximum restraint".
The United States said it was "deeply concerned" by the strike and called on all sides to "do everything possible to protect civilians".
The strike is likely to further escalate tensions between Israel and Hamas and make it more difficult to find a way to end the current conflict.
